Alfie retires after 18 years at Armagh Mall Shopping Centre

AFTER 18 years of service at the Mall Shopping Centre in Armagh, Alfie McAllister has retired from his role of Operations Manager.

Alfie was one of the first employees to start work in the Shopping Centre back when it first opened its doors in 1998.

“Executive Security were looking for part-time members of staff in the centre and I applied and got the job,” said Alfie.

“A few years later I was promoted to the role of Operations Manager and I have been there ever since!”

The Mall first welcomed shoppers into the centre back in 1998, when the only two tenants were Sainsbury’s and Options.

Two years previously Alfie was awarded an MBE for services to the community.

Prior to joining as a member of staff at the Mall Shopping Centre, Alfie served in the British Army, where he travelled all over the world to the likes of Germany, Belize and Africa with the armed forces.

He has been a recognisable face to customers and tenants since down through the years and Alfie said he will miss the day to day interaction with members of the public and the staff.

“When we first started we had some of the usual problems to contend with, but over the past few years we have been very lucky and we have a good relationship with our customers and the tenants in the centre.

“Nine times out of ten if someone has stepped out of line in the centre, a quiet word with them usually sorted out the problem, but when it was needed we always rang the police.”

Alfie said he has been incredibly fortunate to work under two hard-working managers of the centre.

“I have been fortunate to work under two fantastic managers, the first being David Brewerton, who was the manager of the centre from when it first opened its doors right until 2012/2013 when he retired.

“Now we have Jenny Sheridan as manager and she has made a vast difference to the centre and she has been a pleasure to work with.

“I’m going to miss getting out of my bed and heading down to the centre first thing in the morning.”

When asked about his retirement plans, Alfie said he is looking forward to sitting back and relaxing and spending more time with his wife.

“I have nothing major planned, but I have been married for 47 years and I intend to sit back and relax and enjoy my retirement.”

Manager of the Mall Shopping Centre, Jenny Sheridan said that Alfie has constantly gone ‘above and beyond’ his role as Operations Manager.

“The incredible work that Alfie has done over the last 18 years is much appreciated by all the staff and the customers.

“He is a valuable asset to the Shopping Centre and when he has been off over the last few months his absence has been recognised and he has been sorely missed.

“I really can’t believe that he has decided to retire and we wish him all the best in his retirement and he well and truly deserves it.”
