Bright future for third level education in city

Story Ulster Gazette:

ARMAGH has received a further jobs boost with the city’s new multi-million pound Southern Regional College set to bring significant construction work to the area, ahead of completion in early 2020.
A business case for the estates projects has been approved by the Department for Employment and Learning and the Department of Finance and Personnel, for a capital investment of approximately £90 million by Southern Regional College in new facilities.
The projects will see new campuses being developed on existing sites in Armagh and Banbridge, while the Craigavon development will replace the Lurgan and Portadown campuses, with a single new high quality campus in Craigavon.
The projects will be taken forward over the next four years and will see the new buildings delivered in early 2020.
Southern Regional College has appointed WYG Management Services Ltd to bring forward the designs of the new builds, to lead the planning process and to assist in the procurement of the main contractors to deliver the projects.
Both existing campuses in Armagh and Banbridge will remain live and fully operational during the construction phase of the new campuses and public consultation on the plans that are being prepared, will take place over the coming weeks.
The new campus at Armagh, which is due for completion in early 2020, is to be constructed on the existing Lonsdale Road site.
The building will feature approximately 12,000m2 of specialist accommodation across a number of curriculum areas, facilitating the current curricula offered in Armagh with the option for further extension of provision.
A key feature of all new campuses is the provision of innovation hubs, through which students will engage with business and industry in real world industrial projects and challenges.
The new campus will also include learning facilities required for degree and postgraduate levels. This includes the provision of state-of-the-art Learning Resource Centres, integrated student social areas and learning support services.
Curriculum during construction phase will be relocated to the existing Southern Regional College Campus at Lisanally Road, with plans underway to secure an additional education facility off the Killylea Road in Armagh.
A planning public consultation event is to be held in the Study Hall at Lonsdale building, College Hill, Armagh on Monday, June 27, between 10am and 9pm.
An information exhibit will also be available on the SRC website at www.src.ac.uk between Tuesday June 28 and Thursday July 14, along with the ability to provide comment to: estatesproject@src.ac.uk.
